Colonials improve to 3-1 after withstanding late rally
WASHINGTON - Four days after James Bishop IV went for an A-10 era GW scoring record with 44 points on the road at Hofstra, the lefty once again led his team in scoring. This time, however, it came in a win and the total was considerably lower. Bishop's 19 points were enough to lead a balanced scoring attack that pulled away from UMES then withstood a late Hawks' surge in a 69-64 win.
Bishop's game-high 19 came on 6-of-11 shooting while Baltimore buddy and backcourt brethren Brendan Adams dropped in 17 on 5-of-12 shooting with a career-high six helpers. Ricky Lindo Jr. held his own with 14 points and eight rebounds while contending with UMES' Nathaniel Pollard Jr. who ripped down a game-high 15 boards.
The Hawks' pressure forced 18 GW turnovers and despite them falling down by as many as 19 points, the hawk wouldn't die in closing that nearly 20-point margin with 6:19 to play to five in the closing sequence.
GW battled foul trouble as both Lindo and Hunter Dean had to sit for lengthy stretches, as neither starting big was on the floor for more than 20:17, giving UMES a chance to overcome their relative lack of size. Still, the Buff and Blue took advantage of the Hawks' lack of a rim protector and got 36 of its 69 points in the paint with another 19 coming at the charity stripe.
After GW went west last season and took a loss in sunny San Diego, the Buff and Blue's returnees can exact a bit of revenge this season on home turf. UC San Diego looms next on the schedule when the Tritons come for an early Thanksgiving on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. live on ESPN+.
