Bishop IV and Adams combine for 45 in comeback effort
WASHINGTON - On Tuesday night in Foggy Bottom, the Buff and Blue entered play with a modest three-game home winning streak to start the season and looking to extend that streak with the next two games for GW in D.C. as well. Unfortunately, the home team will have to start a new streak. For the second year in a row, UC San Diego was able to topple George Washington, as little went the way of the east coasters, until a furious late rally, in a 75-70 setback.
Despite another team-high of 25 points from James Bishop IV - who is now just four points from 1,000 in his career - GW was out of sync for most of the night. Brendan Adams tried to do his part with 20 points, but the backcourt of Bishop, Adams and Maximus Edwards was held in check from facilitating by a Tritons' defense that allowed the trio just seven assists while turning them over nine times. While the trio combined for 55 points on 21-of-42 shooting (.500), nobody else could get going as foul trouble plagued GDUB. The squad connected at a .280 clip from long range (7-of-25) and was only able to get to the line 15 times and connect on 11.
Channeling his inner Rex Walters circa 1993, the Tritons' Bryce Pope had his way with the GW defense. The 6-3 guard dropped 31 points in just over 36 minutes, with a bevy of shots that included deft floaters, driving layups and long range 3-pointers. He finished an efficient 11-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three, seemingly getting a bucket whenever his team needed it as UCSD kept GW at bay and trailing by double digits for most of the contest.
With three and a half minutes remaining a Keegan Harvey 3-pointer closed a 12-point margin to 66-57, and three minutes later after a sequence of missed UC San Diego free throws, an Adams' make at the charity stripe had GW within two at 72-70 with :22 to play. After the Tritons extended the margin to three, George Washington had a chance to force OT on its final possession but Adams' game-tying try was off and the game was put away on the other end.
GW will wait until the holiday weekend for a chance to start its next streak. New Hampshire comes to town for a Small Business Saturday contest at the Charles E. Smith Center with tip time coming at 2 p.m. on NBC Sports Washington and ESPN+.
