GW heads to the Bronx for a pair of challenging MAWPC contests
WASHINGTON - #19 GW water polo (15-1, 5-0) is in the midst of a program-record 15-game win streak and looking to tack on two more as it heads to the Bronx for a pair of MAWPC games against #18 Fordham (11 a.m.) and Wagner (7 p.m.). Both games will be aired live on StretchLive.
Last Time Out:Â
GW narrowly escaped a pair of MAWPC opponents last weekend. The Buff and Blue downed Mount St. Mary's, 16-14, in Emmitsburg, Maryland before making the two-hour trip to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania and downing Bucknell, 12-11.
The Buff and Blue were in unfamiliar territory, down 10-8 against Mount St. Mary's at halftime, but found second-half success behind a hat trick from Nick Schroeder and timely saves from Luca Castorina. The win over the Mountaineers was GW's 14th in a row, and bumped the Colonials up to 4-0 in conference play.Â
The second quarter ended up being the difference against Bucknell. In the first, third and fourth quarters, GW and Bucknell matched each other's scoring output with nine goals a side. GW nabbed a one-goal advantage in the second quarter, which would be enough to defeat the Bison, 12-11, for the second time this season. With the win, the Colonials moved to 5-0 against MAWPC opponents while capturing its 15th consecutive win. Â
Something Must Give:
Both games this weekend appear to be tough matchups for the Colonials. While GW has won 15 games in a row, both opponents are on hot streaks of their own. #18 Fordham is entering Saturday unbeaten in MAWPC games and winners of its last six, while Wagner has won its last five games, all MAWPC contests. All three teams are used to winning of late, meaning something must give on Saturday.Â
Ranked Rams:Â
#18 Fordham (14-6, 8-0) is coming into Saturday's contest as the only team other than GW who is undefeated in MAWPC play. The Rams are coming off a 4-0 weekend in which they outscored MAWPC opponents 83-28. Fordham and GW have been ranked first and second, respectively, in the MAWPC standings for the past four weeks, and the two have been separated by just a single point for the past two weeks.
Scouting the Seahawks:Â
Wagner (9-10, 5-4) has turned its season around since its last meeting with GW. The Seahawks started 0-4 in conference play which included falling to GW, 15-10, on October 1. Since then, Wagner has gone on a five-game MAWPC win streak, including wins over Navy, Mercyhurst, McKendree, Gannon and Salem. Wagner will be tested against Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon before meeting with GW for the second time this season on Saturday evening.Â
