Colonials finish game on 20-6 run to earn third league victory
WASHINGTON - Spurred on by the return of its fans to the Charles E. Smith Center after the expired moratorium on ticketed fans due to Omicron, the George Washington men's basketball team was sure to show the Foggy Bottom faithful what they had been missing on Sunday in the World's Most Powerful City in a complete 64-55 triumph over Fordham.
After the game was knotted at 15, GW embarked on a 14-3 run to assume a 29-18 edge in the closing minutes of the first half. Fordham closed with the final four points of the period as the home team took a seven-point edge into intermission. James Bishop had 11 in the opening half to lead all scorers.
George Washington then opened the second with a quick four-point spurt to extend back to 11, but the New Yorkers would not go away quietly, despite GW leading for more than three quarters of the contest. The Rams closed to 40-38 before a Ricky Lindo Jr. lay-in pushed the margin beyond a possession with 12:18 to play.
A tight one ensued from there as the visitors fought back once again and held a lead of its own at 44-42 before GW found the equalizer to knot it at 44 up. Then trailing 49-44 nearing the 6:00 mark, the Buff and Blue went on a thrilling 12-0 spurt to regain control. James Bishop opened the spurt with a umper, followed by a Lindo Jr. bunny off a sweet find from Joe Bamisile that pulled them within one, Then, a go-ahead three from Bamisile preceded a Bishop bucket to make it 53-49 with 3:38 to play. Once Bishop buried another three to extend GW's lead to seven, strong ball-handling led the way to secure the win.
Bishop finished with a game-high 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting (3-of-7 3pt FG), Lindo Jr. double-doubled (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Hunter Dean was once again huge in the win, with seven points and a career-high 14 rebounds, the Louisiana native's fourth-straight game with double-digit boards.
Behind Dean and Lindo's efforts, George Washington commanded a 40-32 rebounding edge, as outside of Chuba Ohams (13 points, 10 rebounds) no other Fordham player collected more than five caroms.
With the win, GW has now traded wins and losses for its last six games. Wins vs. George Mason and at Rhode Island, came after setbacks vs. Dayton and at Saint Joseph's as the squad is now within a game of .500 in the conference again at 3-4. Pleasantly for George Washington supporters across the country, each of their club's last three victories came on national television.
GDUB will look to make it two in a row and four-of-its-last-six with a win on Wednesday night against La Salle. Tip time in that contest is 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
