Bamisile sets career high with 26, nets game-winner with 3.5 seconds left
WASHINGTON - In a Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee in D.C. — blocks away from where Dr. King is immortalized — two conference rivals and nearby neighbors gave it their all and went toe-to-toe in heart-pulsing action. George Washington welcomed George Mason from across the Potomac River, and the friendly rivals treated a national television audience to an absolute thriller. Trailing 76-75 with 7.0 to play, GW inbounded across from its own bench looking for its first A-10 win of the year. James Bishop inbounded to Joe Bamisile, who drove from the right wing and laid up the go-ahead bucket with 3.5 seconds to play. After denying Mason on the ensuing inbounds play, GW ran out the clock to preserve the 77-76 win.
Minus the services of starters Ricky Lindo Jr., Brendan Adams and Noel Brown, it was Bamisile and Bishop who powered the Buff and Blue to victory. Bamisile finished with a career-high 26 points — none bigger than the final two — while securing a team-high six rebounds in a contest that saw GW forced to play with five guards on the floor at times. Bishop, for his part, had one of his best games of the season with 23 points on 8-of-16 field goal attempts, with five assists against nary a turnover. Bamisile and Bishop also teamed for an unusual moment when after a Bamisile poster dunk, Bishop was given a technical foul for celebrating.
The tomahawk slam dunk evened the game at 57 with 9:30 to go, but Mason responded with a 13-0 run over the next three minutes to take the largest lead of the day for either side. But Bamisile and Bishop would not be denied, surging the Colonials to a game-ending 18-4 run that was capped off by Bamisile's layup. The duo combined for 12 points in the stretch as GW hit eight of its final 11 shots while forcing four Mason turnovers and holding the Patriots to 2-of-7 from the floor.
The hosts were also helped to victory by another emergent performance from first-year local product Brayon Freeman. The true frosh logged 32:10 as a key facilitator, scoring 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting in the process. Freeman was all over the court in an energetic show that also included three assists and two steals. Bishop's three steals led the way while four others had a swipe apiece, as GW pilfered nine balls from Mason compared to the Patriots' three steals, and GDUB parlayed a 13-6 advantage in turnovers forced into a whopping 20-5 edge on points off those miscues that was critical in closing a 13-point deficit in the final six minutes.
The GW cause was also aided by a perfect 9-for-9 showing at the charity stripe while Mason left seven points at the free throw line in their 12-of-19 effort. The Patriots were led by D'Shawn Schwartz's 27 points, while Davonte Gaines double-doubled with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The visitors put five in double figures in scoring.
Next up for GW is the short ride to Philly to play a rescheduled game against Saint Joseph's. After the original contest was postponed, the Buff and Blue and the Hawks clash Wednesday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN+. GW will be looking to even its conference record at 2-2.
