Bamisile puts up 22, Dean grabs career-high 11 rebounds
PHILADELPHIA - Facing a quick turnaround after an emotional victory on Monday, GW men's basketball took to the floor against a desperate Saint Joseph's squad looking to snap a three-game losing streak on Wednesday night at Hagan Arena. After a back-and-forth opening half, it was the host Hawks who made the decisive runs, pulling away for a 72-61 victory.
GW was within three, 33-30, with three minutes remaining in the first half after an opening exchange of five lead changes and two ties. The Hawks, though, went on an extended 10-2 spurt that stretched across intermission to open up a double-digit advantage, 43-32, with 17 minutes left.
The Colonials whittled the deficit to as little Ias five, 49-44, with 11 minutes left on a Joe Bamisile layup. Again, though, SJU came right back with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes that put the game out of reach.
Bamisile, who entered the night averaging 20.7 ppg against A-10 completion, reached the 20-point threshold for the third time in four conference games with 22 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Brayon Freeman scored 11 of his 13 points after intermission, becoming the lone other Colonial in double figures.
Hunter Dean held his own on the interior, setting career-high with 11 rebounds (four offensive) and five blocks while adding four points.
GW held St. Joe's leading scorer, Jordan Hall, without a made field goal, but did not have an answer for Taylor Funk (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Ejike Obinna (16 points, 12 rebounds), who each posted double-doubles in the winning effort.
The Buff & Blue will continue their search for the first road win of the season in the middle game of a three-game road swing at Rhode Island on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 with coverage on USA Network.
