Yohannes leads GW’s offense for second-straight match
WASHINGTON – GW volleyball took American to four sets on Saturday night but fell to the Eagles, 17-25, 25-18, 20-25, 19-25.
After recording the first point of the match, GW would never lead again in set one. American's 11-kill offense helped the home team gain the early 1-0 advantage.
The Buff and Blue were in sync both offensively and defensively in set two with Salem Yohannes and Liv Womble registering four and three kills, respectively. Melody Williams was key at the net, denying the American offense five separate times. Markella Lanara assisted on defense with a pair of back-to-back blocks to help GW go on a 5-2 scoring run. With momentum on the visiting side of the floor, GW would never look back, taking set two, 25-18.
Yohannes continued on offense with two quick kills in set three. Eight lead changes took place before American eventually outscored GW 10-2 in the latter half of the set to take the 2-1 match advantage.
American came out scoring in what would be the final set, putting together a 14-5 lead. GW would go on a run of its own but couldn't cut the margin to less than five. Yohannes tallied five of her 18 kills on the night in set four.
