Yohannes paces Buff and Blue in rookie debut
WASHINGTON -Â GW volleyball fell in its season opener on Friday night at Howard, dropping the match in straight sets (23-25, 26-28, 18-25).
First-year Salem Yohannes shined in her rookie debut, tallying a team-best 13 kills.Â
The two teams traded points in the first set, with no team leading by more than three. GW's late rally against two Bison set-points fell short, dropping the opening set, 23-25.
The story remained the same in set two with 15 ties and five lead changes. Yohannes picked up seven of her 13 kills in set two, including a crucial 26th point to keep the set alive. Sarah Pintel added four kills, finishing with seven on the night. In the end, Howard's Bria Woodard proved to be the offensive difference-maker to help the Bison take the two-set advantage.Â
The Buff and Blue came out on the attack in set three, registering five kills in their first eight points, taking an early 8-5 lead over the home team. The Bison would eventually regain control, rattling off five in a row, outscoring the Buff and Blue 13-6 in the back half of the set to complete the sweep.Â
GW will visit American on Saturday night with first serve set for 7 p.m. Â
