GW opens up fourth season under head coach Michelle Demko
WASHINGTON - GW women's soccer kicks off its fall 2021 campaign with a pair of road matches starting on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Elon. The Colonials will then visit Navy on Sunday for a 4 p.m. kick.
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS: Coming off a delayed 2020 season that was played in the spring semester and saw GW finish 6-4-1 (4-3-1 A-10), the Buff & Blue are projected to finish fourth in league play. Reigning champion Saint Louis tops the poll, followed by Dayton and VCU. The Colonials are aiming for their second conference championship appearance under fourth-year head coach Michelle Demko after reaching the final in 2019.
WHO'S BACK: Junior Tori Minda headlines the returning cast for GW after tallying a career-best five goals in the spring. She finished with a team-high 32 shots on the year, putting 16 on net. Captain Kelly Amador returns for her graduate season after playing over 1,000 minutes on defense and in the midfield. Tamaki Machi is back between the pipes after tying her career-high with five shutouts and finishing second in the A-10 with 57 saves.
NEW FACES ON THE PITCH: GW welcomes 11 newcomers this fall, headlined by a pair of graduate transfers in Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky (Connecticut) and Cammie Dopke (Harvard). In regards to the new class, Coach Demko made note that "people will see these new faces on every line on the field for us. Collectively they bring a wealth of speed, athleticism, technical and tactical sophistication and a competitive mentality that will help push our program forward. I can't wait to get started with them and look forward to having them join our soccer family."
ABOUT ELON: The Phoenix enter the season with high hopes after being projected second in the CAA preseason poll, the highest ranking in program history. Elon won the CAA championship in the spring for the first time ever, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Katie Lowe was named to the preseason All-CAA team after an All-Rookie campaign on defense in the spring, helping Elon secure six shutouts on the year.
ABOUT NAVY: The Midshipmen are coming off consecutive Patriot League championships and NCAA Tournament berths. Navy was picked to repeat yet again as champions with Avery Fries and Victoria Tran earning a spot on the Preseason All-Conference team. Tran was tabbed the league's Preseason Midfielder of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with three goals and eight points during the 2021 spring season.
