Buff & Blue set to open vs. Dayton
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Hours after clinching its first conference regular season title in program history, GW softball was tabbed as the top seed for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship.
The Buff and Blue are slated to open the four-team, double-elimination tournament on Thursday at 11 a.m. with a matchup vs. fourth-seeded Dayton at SJU Softball Field in Merion Station, Pa.
The winner advances to a Friday semifinal vs. either No. 2 Saint Joseph's or No. 3 Fordham while the loser will play later Thursday in an elimination game. The champion is set to be crowned on Saturday with the winner earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.
GW (33-8 overall) went 23-1 during the A-10 regular season, finishing atop the Central Pod well clear of second-place Dayton (14-8). The Colonials swept the Flyers in a weekend series on the Mount Vernon Campus on April 10-11.
Host Saint Joseph's (19-3) took the top spot in the North Pod after taking three of four games from previously unbeaten Fordham (17-3) over the weekend.
GW has qualified for its third straight A-10 Championship (2018, 2019, 2021) and will compete in the tournament for the seventh time overall. In 2019, the Colonials were named co-champions with Fordham after the winner-take-all final was rained out.
