Buff & Blue closed regular season at 23-1 in conference play
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - GW softball secured its first Atlantic 10 regular season title on Sunday, completing a 23-1 run through conference play with a doubleheader sweep at St. Bonaventure.
The Buff and Blue took down the Bonnies twice, 6-0 and 14-5, to finish out a perfect final weekend of the regular season and wrap up the top seed for the upcoming A-10 Championship. The bracket for the four-team conference tournament is expected to be released later Sunday.
Behind a nationally-ranked offense and excellent pitching from Sierra Lange and Faith Weber, GW dropped just one game over six weekends of A-10 competition in the conference's Central Pod, including a sparkling 12-0 home mark on the Mount Vernon Campus.
On Sunday, the Colonials ran their winning streak to 11 games with two more victories to finish out a series in which they outscored the Bonnies by a combined score of 44-6. Alessandra Ponce came through with a performance to remember in the second game, setting a program record with eight RBIs.
GW 6, St. Bonaventure 0:Â Lange tossed her fifth shutout of the spring in the opener while also helping her own cause with a double, a triple and two RBIs.
GW jumped on top with a pair of runs in the third inning. Lange's sac fly scored Amber Lotz before Ponce smacked an RBI single up the middle to bring home Jessica Linquist.
Maggie Greco doubled the lead an inning later, ripping a shot into the gap in right center with a runner on and racing all the way around to score for an inside-the-park home run.
GW padded its advantage once again in the sixth with Linquist and Lange providing run-scoring hits.
Lotz had three hits and scored twice, while Lange, Linquist and Weber had two knocks apiece.
Lange's triple was her team-leading fourth of the season, and Greco's was the first of her career.
Lange went the distance in a four-hitter while racking up eight Ks to improve to 17-7 on the season.
GW 14, St. Bonaventure 5:Â In the series finale, the Buff and Blue were able to flex their offensive muscle to shake off the Bonnies, highlighted by Ponce's record-breaking effort that included a grand slam and a three-run double.
GW trailed 1-0 before striking four runs in the top of the third. Ponce and Alexa Williams drove in runs before Weber cleared the fence in right with a two-run homer, her 13th of the season and second of the weekend.
After St. Bonaventure rallied back in front with four runs in the bottom of the third, the visitors answered immediately with Ponce's two-out grand slam just inside the foul pole down the left-field line.
The Colonials kept adding on with one run in the fifth, another in the sixth and four more in the seventh to pull away.Â
Already with five RBIs, Ponce drove in three more runs in the seventh with a bases-loaded double to break the program single-game record that Jenna Cone had set earlier this season. It's the second-most runs driven in by anyone in a D-I game this season. She now leads the club with 53 RBIs for the season.
Lange provided an offensive spark once again with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and two runs scored, while Williams chipped in three hits and three RBIs.
Cone set her own program record in the game by drawing walks in all five of her plate appearances, finishing the weekend with nine free passes across the four games.
Weber pitched the first five innings to record her 14th victory of the season before Lange came on for the final two frames to close out the victory and the regular season title.
