Buff & Blue knocked off St. Joe's in elimination game
MERION STATION, Pa. - GW softball kept alive its bid for an A-10 Championship title on Thursday afternoon with an 8-0 run-rule triumph over host Saint Joseph's in an elimination game at SJU Softball Field.
With their backs against the wall after a 2-0 loss to Dayton to open the day, the top-seeded Buff and Blue got the bats rolling, led by three RBIs apiece from Sierra Lange and Jenna Cone, to knock out the second-seeded Hawks.
GW will need three more wins to claim a title in the double-elimination tournament, beginning Friday at 2:30 p.m. vs. the loser of the earlier semifinal between Fordham and Dayton.
GW 8, Saint Joseph's 0 (6 innings):Â The Buff and Blue got back on track with their third run-rule victory over the Hawks in as many meetings this season.
With the game scoreless in the third, GW's nationally-ranked offense finally broke through with Cone splitting the right-field gap for a two-run double. The two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year would come around to score on Alessandra Ponce's sac fly to extend the lead to 3-0.
An inning later, the bottom of the order again provided a spark. No. 9 hitter Sidney Bloomfield stroked an RBI single, and after Jessica Linquist and Cone reached, Lange cleared the bases with a three-run double into the left-field corner to make it 7-0.
The score stayed there until the sixth when the first three Colonials reached base to set the stage for a walk-off victory. Cone chopped one to shortstop, and Amber Lotz raced home ahead of the throw to end the game and secure GW's chance to play for a spot in Saturday's final.
Lange went 2-for-3 with the three RBIs, while Cone finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Lotz and Bloomfield scored two runs apiece, as well.
In addition to her strong work at the plate, Lange combined with Faith Weber on the shutout in her second start of the day. Facing the squad that she no-hit back on April 17, the newly-minted A-10 Pitcher of the Year tossed five scoreless frames, scattering three hits while striking out seven.
Dayton 2, GW 0:Â In the opener, Dayton pitchers Addy Bullis and Sarah Bailitz combined to shut down the Buff and Blue.
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead on Megan Ward's two-out, two-run triple in the top of the second inning and then held on despite going hitless after that.
GW put runners on base in every inning but were unable to score. The Buff and Blue loaded the bases in the third inning before Bullis buckled down to squash the threat, and they put two on in the seventh vs. Bailitz before a fielder's choice ended the game.
Lotz reached in all three of her at-bats with two singles and a walk, and Ponce did the same thanks to a walk, an HBP and an error.
Lange allowed two runs on five hits through the first two innings before settling in and holding the Flyers without a hit over the final five frames. She recorded six strikeouts vs. no walks in her complete game.
