Stella Wiesemann named A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After helping GW women's tennis punch its ticket to the semifinals in Atlantic 10 postseason play, Stella Wiesemann, Alexis Nelson and Lindsay Thompson combined to earn five All-Conference awards, the A-10 announced on Tuesday.
Wiesemann, a first-year from Jena, Germany, was named the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer and was also selected to the All-Conference First Team. Wiesemann finished the spring season with a 9-4 singles record at the No. 1 position and a 7-5 doubles record, also in the No. 1 spot.
Wiesemann is just the fifth first-year in program history to earn the major conference award and the first since Tracy Wei in 2000.
After posting a 9-2 record in singles play, Nelson joins Wiesemann on the All-Conference First Team. A graduate transfer from Cal, Nelson made the most of her season representing the Buff and Blue, playing the entire spring slate at the No. 2 position in singles. Nelson was also named to the All-Academic Team with a perfect 4.0 GPA in Sport Management.
Following her debut season, Thompson picked up All-Conference Second Team honors after putting together a 5-8 singles record and a 10-6 doubles count. The duo of Thompson and Nelson earned the No. 89 spot in the ITA national doubles rankings released on April 28.
