Cone, Lange & Linquist earn First-Team honors
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - As it prepares for its NCAA debut at the Baton Rouge Regional, George Washington softball landed a program-record seven student-athletes on the NFCA All Mid-Atlantic Region list on Thursday, highlighted by First Team selections for Jenna Cone, Sierra Lange and Jessica Linquist.
Â
Faith Weber, Sidney Bloomfield and Alessandra Ponce were named to the All-Region Second Team, while first-year Alexa Williams earned a spot on the Third Team. The group will now be eligible for All-America consideration from the NFCA.
Â
The Buff and Blue, who own a 37-9 overall record after sweeping the A-10 regular season and tournament titles, had the most honorees in their region and shattered the previous program record of four from 2019 when Cone, Lange, Ponce and Linquist secured All-Region honors.
Â
A Trabuco Canyon, Calif., native, Cone earned All-Region recognition at third base for the fourth time in her decorated career with her second First-Team nod.Â
Â
The two-time A-10 Player of the Year is slashing .414/.523/.886 entering the NCAA Tournament with 17 home runs to lead the Atlantic 10 and 51 RBIs. She was named to the A-10 All-Championship Team after driving in six runs in five games last weekend to push her career RBI total to 254, most among any active student-athlete nationally.
Â
Honored as the top utility/pitcher in the Mid-Atlantic, Lange became the first hurler in program history to be named A-10 Pitcher of the Year last week, before being named to the All-Region First Team for the second time in her career.
Â
In her return after missing the 2020 season due to injury, Lange has had a remarkable spring in the circle, piling up 21 wins while recording a career-best 1.72 ERA with 199 strikeouts in 174.2 innings. She has also stoked a nationally-ranked offense from the No. 3 hole, leading the squad with 62 hits, including a career-high seven home runs, seven doubles and four triples.
Â
Linquist picked up her second All-Region in recognition of her work behind the plate and as a catalyst at the top of the batting order.Â
The graduate student from West Deptford, N.J., has hit .366, with an on-base percentage of .541 that ranks 22nd in the country, pacing the squad in runs (53), doubles (16) and walks (40). She's also started every game at catcher, working with a pitching staff that ranks 13th in the nation with a 1.81 ERA.
Â
Tabbed behind Lange at utility/pitcher, Weber has been similarly excellent all-around, setting career bests in every major pitching and hitting category this spring to earn her first All-Region selection.
The graduate student from New Egypt, N.J., landed on the All A-10 Second Team thanks to a 14-1 record with a 1.86 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 105 1/3 innings while hitting .361 with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs. She's won 14 straight decisions since a season-opening setback, with an 11-0 mark in A-10 play, and ranks 60th in the nation in long balls.
Â
An All A-10 First Team selection, Ponce has earned All-Region honors for a third time thanks to a team-high 58 RBIs to rank third in the nation. The senior from Henderson, Nev., is hitting .309 with 12 home runs, including a pair of key two-run blasts at the A-10 tournament to earn All-Championship honors. She also set the program record with eight RBIs in the regular season finale at St. Bonaventure.
Â
A first-time All-Region pick in the outfield, Bloomfield has provided a consistent spark at the bottom of the lineup, hitting .450 with 45 hits and 26 runs scored in 35 games. The senior from Frankfort, Ill., recorded a team-high .571 (8-for-14) batting average last week at the A-10 Tournament to secure a spot on the All-Championship Team.
Â
Previously honored on the All-Conference Second Team and All-Rookie Team, Williams has put together a shining debut season with a .364 batting average, 41 RBIs and 19 extra-base hits. The El Cajon, Calif., native came up clutch at the A-10 Championship, delivering a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning of a win over Dayton that pushed the tournament to a winner-take-all final game.
Â
GW opens play at the Baton Rouge Regional on Friday vs. Louisiana in a 6:30 p.m. start at Tiger Park.
