Buff and Blue face Louisiana on Friday
WASHINGTON - The Atlantic 10 champion George Washington softball team is headed to the Baton Rouge Regional for its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
The third-seeded Buff and Blue will face No. 2 seed Louisiana in their opener on Friday at 6:30 p.m. as part of a regional at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge, La., that also includes host LSU and McNeese State.
The double-elimination Baton Rouge Regional is slated to crown a champion on Sunday with the winner advancing to face the winner of the Tallahassee Regional.
GW (37-9) received its NCAA assignment on Sunday evening during a selection special televised on ESPN2, a day after beating Dayton twice to claim the A-10 Championship title.
Led by A-10 Player of the Year Jenna Cone and A-10 Pitcher of the Year Sierra Lange, the Colonials rolled to their first conference regular season title with a 23-1 mark before following up with a tournament crown this week at Saint Joseph's.
Head Coach Shane Winkler's squad dropped its opener at the A-10 Championship before winning four straight elimination games to secure another trophy and a place at the national tournament.Â
Lange was named Most Outstanding Player after finishing the week 4-1 with a 1.27 ERA and 29 strikeouts across 33 innings while also hitting .389 with six RBIs. Cone, Sidney Bloomfield, Amber Lotz and Alessandra Ponce were also recognized on the All-Championship Team.
At the Baton Rouge Regional, GW will have to win at least three games over three days to advance. LSU earned the No. 7 national seed and enters the regional at 32-19 (13-11 SEC).Â
Ranked No. 14 nationally in the latest USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, Louisiana, GW's opening opponent, won the Sun Belt title and sits at 44-10 overall. Fourth-seeded McNeese State (34-24) earned the automatic bid out of the Southland Conference.
LSU (two meetings in 2014) is the only member of the regional that the Buff and Blue have previously faced in program history.
