Cone, Lange & Williams honored
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following its resounding sweep of St. Bonaventure to clinch its first conference regular season title, GW softball has swept the Atlantic 10 weekly awards.
Jenna Cone was named A-10 Player of the Week for the second time this season and the seventh time in her decorated career, while Sierra Lange (Pitcher of the Week) and Alexa Williams (Rookie of the Week) also landed recognition from the conference.
It's the second time in program history, and first since April 15, 2013, that the Buff and Blue claimed all three awards in the same week.
Cone put together another tremendous weekend at the plate, posting a .571/.824/1.429 slash line with two home runs, five RBIs and eight runs scored. The graduate student from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., reached base multiple times in all four victories thanks to four hits, nine walks and an HBP.Â
Cone started the series by going 2-for-2 with two long balls, three RBIs and three runs scored in an 11-1 win. She added two more RBIs and two more runs scored to help the Buff and Blue take the second game of the doubleheader, 13-0. After going 1-for-3 with a walk in a 6-0 win to start Sunday, she set a program record with five walks in the series finale and scored three times in a 14-5 triumph.
Cone, who was previously honored as A-10 Player of the Week on April 26, bumped her season batting average up to .421 and her on-base percentage to .536 while increasing her conference-best home run total to 17.
Lange's all-around excellence was on full display throughout the weekend. In the circle, the redshirt junior from Plano, Texas, went 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA across 14 innings in three appearances with 23 strikeouts. She also hit .615 (8-for-13) with three doubles and a triple and five runs scored in the series.
Lange recorded 12 of 15 outs via K in the opener, allowing one run on four hits in a run-rule victory. In Sunday's opener, she tossed a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts before returning to the circle in a relief appearance in the series finale with two more perfect innings.
Now 17-7 on the season with a team-best 1.83 ERA, Lange was previously honored as A-10 Pitcher of the Week on March 23 and March 30.Â
Williams landed Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this spring after hitting .615 (8-for-13) with seven RBIs. The first-year from El Cajon, Calif., started the weekend by going 5-for-5 across Saturday's doubleheader, highlighted by a four-RBI performance in the opener. In Sunday's finale, she went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, plus a steal.
GW (33-8 overall) will aim to claim the A-10 tournament title later this week and advance to the NCAA Championship for the first time. The top-seeded Colonials open play on Thursday vs. No. 4 Dayton in an 11 a.m. start at SJU Softball Field in Merion Station, Pa.
