Colonials look to finish season sweep of Rams
Looking to continue its unbeaten run in Atlantic 10 play, GW men's soccer visits VCU on Wednesday evening.
The Buff and Blue, now 2-0-2 vs. conference opponents, will try to complete a season sweep of the Rams in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
LAST TIME OUT: GW knocked off Revolutionary Rival George Mason, 1-0, on Saturday behind a first-half goal from Sandro Weber and another sterling defensive effort.
Weber's score, set up by Tom Cooklin and Tobias Williams, was his second of the season. Justin Grady made three saves in his fourth clean sheet in six games this spring.
With the victory, GW clinched an unbeaten regular season on the Mount Vernon Campus at 3-0-1.
DYNAMITE DEFENSE: With just two goals allowed through six games, GW has established itself among the nation's top defensive outfits.
GW's goals against average of 0.30 ranks sixth nationally, while Grady's .913 save percentage is good for eighth among all D-I goalkeepers.
GW's team defense has been excellent with the Buff and Blue limiting opponents to 23 shots on goal across six games. Grady has totaled 21 saves with either three or four stops in each contest so far. He hasn't been scored on over his last 206 minutes, four seconds between the pipes entering Wednesday's contest.
STANDINGS CHECK: GW enters the final week of the regular season tied atop the A-10's Central Pod with Davidson (2-1-2) at eight points. The Buff and Blue have a game in hand on the Wildcats with the teams set to meet on Saturday in North Carolina to close out the regular season.
VCU (1-2-1, four points) remains mathematically in the race with two matches left, as well.
The three pod winners, as well as the top second-place finisher in the conference, advance to the four-team A-10 Championship.
SCOUTING THE RAMS: VCU (2-3-2 overall) dropped a 2-0 decision to Davidson on its home field on Saturday.
Mario Sequeira has been solid in the Rams' net, allowing just four goals across six starts.
Back on March 27, Oscar Haynes Brown's goal in the 33rd minute off an assist from Williams proved to be the difference in the first meeting between these teams in a 1-0 GW victory at The Vern.
This has been a competitive series of late with the Colonials now 3-3-1 in their last seven meetings vs. the Rams dating back to the 2015 season.
