Softball standout honored for excellence at SLU
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jenna Cone of GW softball added to her still-growing list of accolades on Tuesday, earning Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career.
The graduate student from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., was recognized for her excellence in the Buff and Blue's series win at Saint Louis last weekend. She recorded a .467/.529/1.267 slash line with three home runs, three doubles and 10 RBIs over four games.
"I'm extremely proud of Jenna," GW Head Coach Shane Winkler said. "She continues to make A-10 pitchers pay for having to pitch to her because of the depth in our lineup. She proves week in and week out that she's one of the best hitters in the entire country, and she's setting records that may never be broken in our conference. I look forward to her finishing this season even hotter than she has been lately."
Named the A-10 Player of the Week on Monday, Cone had at least one hit in each game vs. the Billikens, and six of her seven hits went for extra bases.
The decorated slugger posted her fourth multi-home run effort of the season in a 9-2 victory to cap a Saturday doubleheader, highlighted by her second grand slam of the spring. On Sunday, she had a pair of doubles in an 8-2 win to open the day before capping the weekend by going 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs in a 15-2 victory.
Cone is now hitting .408 on the season with a conference-leading 14 long balls and 38 RBIs, to pace a nationally-ranked offense that is averaging 7.6 runs per game.
For her career, Cone ranks in the top four among active student-athletes in homers (70, 3rd), RBIs (241, T-1st) and total bases (525, 4th). She was previously honored with the same award on March 12, 2019, after hitting five home runs and driving in 17 runs in a seven-game week.
Cone is set to celebrate Senior Day on the Mount Vernon Campus this weekend when the Buff and Blue host Revolutionary Rival George Mason for a four-game conference set.
