Softball standouts honored after series win at SLU
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Jenna Cone and Maggie Greco of GW softball were honored Monday with Atlantic 10 weekly awards for their efforts in the Buff and Blue's series win at Saint Louis.
Cone was tabbed A-10 Player of the Week for the sixth time in her decorated career, while Greco received conference Rookie of the Week recognition.
Cone led the way offensively in a 3-1 weekend vs. the Billikens, slashing .467/.529/1.267 with three home runs and 10 RBIs over the four games. The graduate student from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., had at least one hit in each game, and six of her seven hits went for extra bases.
Cone recorded her second grand slam of the season in the fourth inning of Saturday's second game and later added a two-run shot in a 9-2 win. On Sunday, she had a pair of doubles in an 8-2 win to open the day before capping the weekend by going 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs in a 15-2 victory.
It's the first weekly award of the spring for Cone, who was previously honored by the conference twice during the 2019 season and three times in 2018.
Greco provided a boost at the plate and in the field during the series. The sophomore from Bolingbrook, Ill., started and had hits in all three of GW's wins, slashing .429/.636/.571 with three RBIs and two runs scored. She also made an impact defensively with a pair of outfield assists to throw out attempting to score and solid glovework in left field throughout the weekend.
Greco's top performance came in Sunday's opener when she reached three times with a single and two walks in four plate appearances.
Greco joins teammate Alexa Williams on the list of rookie honorees this season. (The conference is considering sophomores who had their debut seasons cut short in 2020 for rookie awards this spring.)
Now 15-1 in A-10 play, GW will be back in action on the Mount Vernon Campus this weekend, hosting Revolutionary Rival George Mason in its final four home games of the season.
