Pair of Colonials honored for play vs. the Mount
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Faith Weber and Alexa Williams have been honored for their play in helping GW softball to a four-game weekend sweep of Mount St. Mary's in dominant fashion.
Weber was named GWsports.com Colonial of the Week, while Williams secured Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week recognition.
Weber enjoyed a tremendous all-around weekend in the home-and-home series vs. the Mountaineers. The graduate student from New Egypt, N.J., cracked four home runs and drove in 11 runs over the four victories, posting a .400/.500/1.600 slash line.
Weber socked a three-run home run in the first game of the series and a two-run shot in the third game before a historic effort in the finale in which she hit a two-run homer and a grand slam to equal the program single-game record with six RBIs in an 11-0 victory.
In the circle, Weber was also excellent, tossing 11 shutout innings and picking up a pair of victories. She allowed just eight hits in the two starts and struck out 10, highlighted by a five-inning, three-hit shutout in the series finale.
Williams was honored by the A-10 for her continued stellar play to open her debut campaign. Last weekend, the first-year from El Cajon, Calif., tallied at least one hit in all four contests and posted a .600/.636/1.400 slash line with 10 total RBIs.
Four of Williams' six hits went for extra bases, including a pair of home runs -- a three-run shot and then a two-run shot to account for five of the team's six runs -- in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. She had two hits, including a double, with three RBIs and two runs scored in the series opener, and knocked in two runs in the series finale.
For the season, Williams is hitting .429 (9-for-21) with three home runs, three doubles, 11 RBIs and seven runs scored.
The Buff and Blue are back in action on the Mount Vernon Campus on Thursday, hosting Villanova in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
