Cohen authors quality start in 7-2 setback
ARLINGTON, VA. - GW baseball entered the eighth inning all square with perennial national power Virginia on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft park in search of their first win against the Wahoos since 2008. But the Cavaliers spoiled the party, scoring six runs in their final two at-bats to earn the 7-2 win.
The pitcher's duel featured a plethora of UVA hurlers matching wits with GW's Harrison Cohen, who worked around some traffic to pitch into the seventh inning.
Normally the Buff & Blue's Friday starter, Cohen earned the mid-week nod and yielded just one run on a double steal try in the third inning. The righthander used a double play to get out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth and set down seven in a row before a one-out walk in the seventh ended his day.
In total, Cohen pitched 6.1 innings and allowed a run on five hits with four walks and a strikeout.
GW tied the game in the last of the fourth on a sac fly from Derek Ripp, but stranded the go-ahead run at third. In the last of the sixth, the Colonials had the go-ahead run cut down at the plate trying to score from second with two down.
UVA finally broke through in the eighth inning on a two-run single from Devin Ortiz. The Cavaliers added two more in the frame and another pair in the ninth to pull away.
Anthony Frechette drove in a run with a groundout in the home half of the ninth. Tyler Hix enjoyed multiple hits on the day in 2-for-3 performance with a run scored.
GW is back in action on Wednesday against Navy at 3 p.m.
