Colonials outscore Hornets 24-2 in twin-bill romp
The Colonials pounded out a combined 27 hits in the two games, led by Cade Fergus, Steve DiTomaso, Steve Barmakian and Derek Ripp, all of whom notched four apiece. Fergus drove in five runs in the nightcap thanks to a grand slam while Ditomaso reached base all six times in the first game, going 3-for-3 with three RBI.
Tyler Hix was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI in the opener and Barmakian collected a pair of hits and a pair of RBI in each game.
GW 16, Delaware State 1
Raimo yielded just one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks, needing 98 pitches to earn his second win of the year. The graduate student retired 14 straight at one point and set down 16 of the final 17 batters he faced.
Offensively, GW got on the board with the first career homer from first-year Eddie Micheletti, a two-run shot in the second inning. The Buff & Blue tacked on four in the fourth without the aid of a hit and made it 7-1 on Hix's first dinger of the season leading off the seventh.
The Colonials then blew things wide open with nine runs in the eighth inning. Anthony Frechette and DiTomaso provided the big knocks in the inning, driving in two each.
GW 8, Delaware State 1 (7)
After an exchange of runs in the third, the Colonials piled on with three runs in the fourth on a Fergus sac fly and a two-run double from Barmakian.
On the mound, Jaret Edwards started and allowed a run on four hits in 2.1 frames. Harrison Cohen came on to escape a bases loaded jam in the third with a pair of punchouts. He earned the win with 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings of relief, striking out four.
Jack Horn and Kevin Sylvestri combined to record the final six outs, three via the K.
The two teams wrap up the three-game set tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
