Karol Mlynarczyk shines in Buff & Blue debut
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - In its return to competition, GW swimming and diving opened the season this weekend with a stern challenge at Virginia's Cavalier Invitational.
With 20 swimmers in action, the Buff and Blue got the campaign off to an encouraging start vs. the nationally ranked hosts, Pittsburgh and James Madison at the three-day meet, highlighted by a sterling debut from Karol Mlynarczyk.
Mlynarczyk, a first-year from Poland, won twice on the weekend and cracked the program's all-time top 10 in four different events, including the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 46.97 seconds that ranks among the top 25 in the nation this season.
First-year Marlee Rickert made a strong first impression on the women's side, leading the squad in four individual events with a pair of all-time top 10 times.
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
- After posting his top-25 time in the 100 back in Saturday prelims, Mlynarczyk won the event during the evening session with a time of 47.29 seconds. The newcomer followed Sunday morning by landing another NCAA B-cut effort: He posted a prelim time of 1:43.91 in the 200 back to rank among the top 50 nationally this season before winning the final in 1:43.94. Both of his backstroke bests rank second in program history behind NCAA qualifier Gustav Hokfelt. In addition to those blistering swims, Mlynarczyk landed all-time top 10 times in the 100 fly (:47.98) and 50 free (:20.79).
- In his return to action after taking a redshirt last season, graduate student Emils Pone posted a runner-up finish in the 400 IM (3:56.04) and also led the squad in the 200 IM (1:49.45). The three-time All A-10 performer also came up with strong swims in the 100 back (:49.17) and 200 back (1:45.94).
- A transfer via East Carolina, Marek Osina also enjoyed a strong GW debut, punctuated by a third-place finish Sunday in the 200 fly in a time of 1:49.24 that's good for the No. 6 spot on the program's all-time top 10. He also cracked the top 10 in Saturday's 400 IM with his time of 3:58.82.
- Looking to build off a promising rookie season, Tyler Kawakami led the way in both the 100 free (:44.75) and 200 free (1:40.46).
- On Saturday, Kaden Schwaiger pulled a tough double, narrowly missing a personal best in the 100 fly (:49.58) and also posting a strong swim in the 100 back (:50.24).
- Josh Legge (500 free, 4:39.03), DH Hwang (1,650 free, 16:07.90) and first-year Ethan Tulenko (100 breast, :59.08) were also top finishers for the Buff and Blue.
