HAMPTON, Va. – GW swimming & diving picked up steam on Day Two of the 2026 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships. GW won nine medals on Thursday, and although the gold was elusive, seven silver medals and at least one athlete in every single A-final helped GW's men jump into first place and the Revolutionaries' women move into second place, gaining ground on Richmond.
Thursday was starred by GW's sprinters Joselle Mensah and Holden Thomas breaking both the men's and women's 50-yard freestyle GW records. Mensah (:22.85) topped Chloe Hernandez's three-year old record (:22.91; 2023) in the 50 free A-final, while Thomas (:19.40) knocked off Djurdje Matic's record time (:19:42; 2024) in the leadoff of the 200-yard free relay.
On the women's side, GW had two seniors complete amazing career feats, medaling at A-10s in a specific event in all four years of their career. Ava Topolewski came in second place in the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.78), picking up her second career silver medal to go along with two career golds in the 500. Olivia Paquette scooped a silver from the 3-meter competition, her third career silver medal to go with one gold medal in the 3-meter event.
The best single event for GW on Thursday was the men's 200-yard IM, where the Revolutionaries earned six of the eight A-final slots. The prelim guaranteed GW a big result, which it got with two medals and 83 points for the men's team total.
GW had five student-athletes medal at A-10s for the first time in their careers. Heitor Napolitano Fonseca Reis won silver in the 500-yard freestyle (4:22.30) with the third fastest time in GW history. Andres Brooks took silver in the 200-yard IM with the fourth fastest time in school history (1:45.92), while Matija Radjenovic took bronze in the same event and won his first career medal with a bronze (1:46.94). Mensah's silver in the 50 free was her first medal at A-10s, and so was Talya Erdogan's bronze in the 500-yard free (4:49.80).
The Revolutionaries are back for Day Three of the A-10 Championships tomorrow with prelims at 10:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. All of the day's action will be carried on ESPN+.
