Women's Tennis Set to Open Spring Season at Navy

WASHINGTON- The GW women's tennis team is set to start its spring season on Saturday when it travels to Annapolis, Md. to face Navy. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
BACK ON THE COURT: Sarah Bodewes, Luciana Kunkel, Katarina Marinkovikj and Alexandra Vesikallio return to the Buff and Blue roster after leading the squad with 10 victories apiece in 2019-20.Â
After joining the team in the Spring of 2020, Lara McNaughten finished out her GW debut season with three singles victories.Â
MAKING THEIR DEBUT:Â In the offseason, Alexis Nelson joined the program as a grad transfer from Cal-Berkeley. In her most recent season at Cal, Nelson achieved a national ranking of No. 46 in doubles with her partner Denise Starr. Nelson went 7-10 in singles and 7-7 in doubles.Â
GW also welcomes a trio of first-years. Great Falls, Va. native Charlotte Bell was ranked second in Virginia and 169th nationally. Bell was also ranked 30th on the Hot 100 list for tennis recruiting in August 2018. Lindsay Thompson joins GW from Towson, Md. Thompson was named Baltimore Sun Athlete of the Week twice in her high school career. Stella Wiesemann comes to Foggy Bottom from Jena, Germany. In 2019, Wiesemann won the JenOpen (category A5) and the ISOTEC-Open Hanover (category A6).
SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN: Navy will also start their season on Saturday after a canceled match last weekend due to inclement weather. Navy is paced by sophomore Jillian Taggart who led Navy with 18 singles wins and 17 doubles wins in the 2019-20 season. Navy returns seven others from its 2019-20 roster and welcomes three newcomers.Â
