Colonials host Eagles in first of four straight home dates
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball opens up a season-long four-game homestand on Wednesday evening, welcoming in Coppin State for a 6:30 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
BRAY OF SUNSHINE: First-year Brayon Freeman showcased his all-around potential on Saturday at Charlotte, tallying 11 points, eight assists and six steals, the latter two of which were career-highs and individual season-highs for a Colonial. Freeman is the only player in the country this season to record such a stat line, and the first since Wyoming's Marcus Williams (15 pts, 10 ast, 7 stl) did so on March 10, 2021.
Additionally, Freeman is the first GW player since at least 2010 to record the stat line. The six steals were the most by a Colonial in nearly a year, dating back to Jameer Nelson Jr.'s six swipes vs. Coppin State on Dec. 5, 2020.
23 X 23: Junior James Bishop posted his second straight 23-point game on Saturday at Charlotte, the most productive two-game stretch in his GW career, surpassing the previous best of 45 points last season on Jan. 17 vs. Dayton (17 points) and Feb. 21 vs. Rhode Island (28). Bishop has now scored at least 20 points in back-to-back games seven times in his career, including a pair of four straight 20-point efforts last season.
Bishop is averaging 19.6 ppg over his last seven contests, leading GW on each occasion. He has now paced the Buff & Blue in scoring 22 times in 27 career games with 13 games of at least 20 points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: GW has relied heavily on its starting lineup this season, with most of the production coming from the quartet of Joe Bamisile, Brendan Adams, Ricky Lindo Jr. and James Bishop. The Colonials are 301st out of 358 teams in the NCAA in bench minutes, with reserves only playing 24.8% of the team's minutes (D-I avg: 31%).
In addition, GW ranks 279th nationally, and 10th in the A-10, in minutes continuity at 33.6% (D-I avg: 48.8%). The metric, per KenPom, accounts for the percentage of a team's minutes played by the same player from year to year.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: Coppin State has played its typical rigorous schedule out of the gate, starting 1-11 with its lone win coming in its lone home game against Loyola. The Eagles are 0-11 away from home, most recently falling to Cornell on Friday, 92-77.
Jesse Zarzuela leads three Eagles in double figures with 15.4 ppg., he's joined by Tyree Corbett (12.7) and Nendah Tarke (11.3) in double figures. Coppin plays a notoriously fast tempo, ranking 36th in the country in possessions per game, and takes the 24th most threes in the NCAA, accounting for over 47% of their total shots.
