Bamisile records career-high 25 points as part of double-double
WASHINGTON - Looking to snap a four-game skid in the opening game of a season-long four-game homestand, the GW men's basketball team welcomed Juan Dixon's Coppin State Eagles to the Charles E. Smith Center in downtown Washington, D.C. While the Eagles were spry early, the Buff and Blue found their wings in the second half and cruised to a 75-62 win.
After connecting at a season's best .470 clip from the floor last game at Charlotte, GW brought the heat home and led by Joe Bamisile, the team knocked down 50 percent of its first half shots. Bamisile was otherworldly with his 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the first half, including a long two with his foot on the 3-point line at the first-half buzzer to send GW into the locker room with a 38-36 lead.
Then, reversing an unfortunate trend that head coach Jamion Christian has been working to undo, GW opened the second half as the aggressor and charged out of the halftime locker room on an 8-0 run, holding Coppin without a point through the under 16:00 media timeout in the second.
For the first time in the last eight games, James Bishop was not GW's leading scorer as Bamisile finished with a career-high 25 points to go with his team-high 10 rebounds in his second career double-double.
After becoming the lone player in the county to have a stat line of at least 11 points, eight assists and six steals in a game this season last game, first-year Brayon Freeman was right back at it on Wednesday night. The local kid registered 10 points, eight assists and three steals, while committing just a single turnover. He's now registered a 16:5 assist to turnover ratio across the last two contests.
Brendan Adams (13 points and eight rebounds) and Ricky Lindo Jr. (eight points, nine rebounds) also nearly double-doubled in GW's 13-point win. The lead was 19 at its largest with just over two minutes to go before Coppin narrowed the final margin despite another highlight reel windmill dunk from Bamisile to punctuate the win.
Jesse Zarzuela led Coppin State with 19 points with Tyree Corbett (15 points) and Nendah Tarke (13) also hitting double figures.
GW now takes the weekend off and returns to action Monday to host Radford at 7pm on NBC Sports Washington Plus and ESPN+.
