GW puts four in double figures, including 21 from Bishop
WASHINGTON - On Monday night in downtown D.C., the Radford Highlanders came to visit the George Washington men's basketball team in a non-conference affair. GW was looking for its first two-game winning streak of the still-young season while Radford searched for its first road win after entering play with an unblemished 4-0 mark at home but without a win on the road in six tries. Ultimately, it was the Foggy Bottom five who got what they sought in a 67-58 victory.
While first-year Brayon Freeman proved his prowess as a playmaker for his teammates with back-to-back eight-assist games in his last two contests, to get his team going on Wednesday the D.C.-product got his own buckets first. Freeman netted eight of GW's first 12 points, helping the home side to an early 12-7 lead. GW's lead grew to as many as seven in the opening stanza, 21-14, before settling at five when the teams went into the halftime locker room at 27-22. James Bishop led all scorers with 11 at the break, while Ricky Lindo Jr. had accumulated 10 boards by the intermission.
Looking to recapture the magic of last game when the Buff and Blue stormed into the second half on an 8-0 run, Bishop saw to it that that would happen with a triple to start the second half scoring. After Brendan Adams and Joe Bamisile registered back-to-back buckets -- Bamisile's being of the 360 dunk variety -- to extend the scoring run to 7-0 and give GW its largest lead of the game to that point at 34-22, the squad had to withstand a Highlander surge that cut the lead back to four just after the under-12:00 media timeout. Freeman would hit a three-pointer at the 10:01 mark, though, that put Radford to bed, despite a painstaking final 61 seconds in which the Highlanders tried to claw back with a pair of four-point plays.
Lindo finished with a game-high 14 rebounds to go with 10 points in his second double-double of the season, while Freeman's pair of helpers gave GW four players with two dimes on the night, and a single turnover now gives him a 22:6 assist-to-turnover ratio over the last four games. The first-year guard finished with a career-best 16 points, knocking down a pair of triples for the first time in his career and swiping two steals on the other end.
Bishop finished with a game-high 21 on just 14 shots with a pair of threes. Brendan Adams netted a dozen for GDUB's cause, while Radford was paced by Rashun Williams' 14.
GW now takes nine days off for finals before concluding the non-conference season looking for a three-game winning streak on December 22 by hosting Maryland Eastern Shore in a special noon Wednesday tip-off on NBC Sports Washington and ESPN+.
