Swimmer led the way for Buff & Blue on Saturday
PRINCETON, N.J. - Durde Matic smashed the Atlantic 10 record en route to victory in the 100-yard butterfly and also helped break another mark in the 200-yard medley relay to pace GW swimming and diving on Saturday at Princeton's Big Al Invitational.
The junior from Belgrade, Serbia blew past former Buff and Blue All-American Andrea Bolognesi's 100 fly record during morning prelims and then went even faster during the evening session at DeNunzio Pool to claim victory in a time of 45.72 seconds that ranks among the top 15 performances in the event nationally this season.
Matic also teamed with Karol Mlynarczyk, Marek Osina and Tyler Kawakami to take down a program and conference relay record for the second straight day. The group posted a time of 1:26.91 to take third in the event and bested a mark set at the 2019 A-10 Championships.
Mlynarczyk (100 back) and Osina (400 IM) both posted individual runner-up finishes with NCAA B-cut times, and Molly Smyers, Julia Knox, Carly Perri, Erin McCarthy and Marlee Rickert also qualified for championship finals on the day.
In the team standings, the men moved up a spot to fourth with 338 points, behind Utah (748.5), Princeton (688) and Columbia (440.5) and ahead of Denver (337), and the women maintained their hold on fourth with 378 points, behind Utah (678), Princeton (548) and Denver (434) and in front of Rutgers (346).
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
- Matic posted a time of 46.03 seconds during 100 fly prelims before shaving 35 hundredths of a second off that performance to beat second-place Ben Waterman of Utah by more than three-quarters of a second. His finals swim was 1.19 seconds faster than Bolognesi's record time that had stood since 2017.
- Osina posted his second runner-up finish of the meet with a season-best time of 3:50.47 in the 400 IM finals. First-years Connor Rodgers (11th, 3:55.41) and Bode Ringenbach (13th, 3:57.60) also scored in the event and cracked the program's all-time top 10 list with their finals swims.
- Mlynarczyk took second in the 100 back in 47.16 seconds, dropping 13 hundredths of a second off his prelims time. Ryan Patterson (12th, :49.88) and Kaden Schwaiger (15th, :50.21) also scored there.
- Mlynarczyk and Osina also teamed with Philip Moldovanu and Ethan Tulenko on a seventh-place finish in the 800 free relay in 6:40.52.
- Kawakami won the B final of the 100 breast to take ninth in a season-best time of 54.82 seconds, dropping three-quarters of a second off his prelims time in the process.
- Moldovanu led the Buff and Blue in the 200 free, placing 21st with a finals time of 1:41.81.
- Tulenko cracked the program's all-time top 10 list with his 13th-place finish in the 100 fly in 49.12 seconds. Dylan Koo (15th, :49.20) earned a spot in the B final, as well.
- Spencer Bystrom was GW's top diver on the 3-meter board, taking 14th with a score of 260.10.
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
- Competing in her second championship final of the meet, Perri took third in the 200 free in 1:49.57, which ranks fourth on the program's all-time list. McCarthy was close behind in sixth in 1:50.57. Taylor Bernosky (13th, 1:51.79) and Grace Olivardia (16th, 1:52.23) also scored there.
- A first-year from Allison Park, Pa., Smyers finished fifth in the 400 IM after grabbing a spot on the program's all-time top 10 with her prelims time of 4:23.48, and her fellow rookie Knox also qualified for the championship final with her prelims swim of 4:24.47.
- Perri, McCarthy, Bernosky and Smyers teamed up on a second-place finish in the 800 free relay to close the night in 7:23.89.
- Rickert placed fifth in the 100 back in 55.31 seconds, and Isabel Berdecio won the B final for ninth in a personal-best time of :55.59. Andrea Ho was 10th in :56.40.
- A pair of first-years set the pace in the 100 fly with Moriah Freitas (:55.91) and Chloe Hernandez (:56.76) qualifying for the B final before placing 12th and 14th, respectively.
- Stine Omdahl Petersen won the B final in the 100 breast for ninth in 1:03.24, and she was joined in that race by Ava DeAngelis (13th, 1:05.01) and Courtney Sicinski (15th, 1:05.37).
- Rickert, Petersen, Perri and Rebecca Smolcic combined on a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:42.70.
- Jamie Doak led the way on the 1-meter diving board with an 11th-place finish. The junior qualified for the final with a prelims score of 263.15.
