Buff & Blue head to Princeton for midseason meet
GW swimming and diving returns to action this weekend, competing in Princeton's Big Al Invitational from Friday through Sunday at DeNunzio Pool.
All three days will consist of morning prelims followed by evening finals, simulating the format ahead in the postseason. The field includes Denver, Utah, Rutgers, Columbia and TCU, in addition to the host Tigers. All the action is set to be broadcast via ESPN+.
In that meet, Durde Matic, Philip Moldovanu and Moriah Freitas picked up two wins apiece, and diver Jamie Doak set a pair of program records.
Matic, Moldovanu and Erin McCarthy picked up Atlantic 10 weekly awards in recognition of their performances vs. the Panthers.
The divers were last in action two weekends ago, gaining quality experience at the NC State/GAC Invitational. Doak led the group there, highlighted by a third-place finish on the 3-meter board.
RISING ROOKIES:Â GW's first-year class has excelled in the early going this season.
On the women's side, Freitas has clocked a pair of all-time top 10 times, posting sizzling swims in the 100 fly (:56.55) and 200 fly (2:02.82). Molly Smyers (200 fly, 2:05.79) and Julia Knox (400 IM, 4:25.75) have already cracked the program's all-time leaderboard, as well. Rookie divers Dara Reyblat and Olivia Rosen have also made an impact thus far.
On the men's side, Moldovanu and Bode Ringenbach have both picked up A-10 Rookie of the Week awards. Moldovanu has team-best times in the 500 free (4:38.79) and 1,000 free (9:29.39), while Ringenbach has showcased his versatility, highlighted by a strong swim in the 400 IM (4:03.47) at Pitt that currently ranks sixth in the conference.
OSINA'S SEVEN:Â Coming off a fantastic junior campaign in which he earned six medals (five gold) at the A-10 Championships, Marek Osina has picked right up where he left off this fall.
The senior from Kromeriz, Czech Republic, has team-best times in all seven individual events in which he has competed, including a conference-best effort in the 400 IM (3:55.46). He's also led the Buff and Blue in the 200 free (1:41.64), 200 back (1:48.98), 100 breast (:57.50), 200 breast (2:03.14), 200 fly (1:52.43) and 200 IM (1:51.46).
UP NEXT:Â GW closes out its fall competition schedule next week. The Buff and Blue have a dual meet on tap at Navy next Friday and will also send a contingent to Speedo Junior Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.
