Buff & Blue return to action vs. Panthers
GW swimming and diving returns to competition for the first time in nearly a month, taking on a strong test at Pittsburgh.
The meet gets underway with diving on Friday evening at Trees Pool before resuming Saturday morning with more diving followed by the swimming events. All the action will be broadcast via ACC Network Extra.
Marek Osina was named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week after winning four individual events vs. the Monarchs, while Bode Ringenbach was tabbed the conference's Rookie of the Week in recognition of four strong swims of his own, highlighted by a win in the 200 breast (2:07.95). The men's 200 free relay team of Karol Mlynarczyk, Dylan Koo, Durde Matic and Tyler Kawakami set a pool record with its winning time of 1:23.12.
The women displayed their depth with eight different swimmers winning individual events, and they also claimed victory in all four of the meet's relays. Moriah Freitas was a double winner for the Buff and Blue, taking the 200 fly (2:08.89) and 100 fly (:57.38).
FAST START: In the season-opener vs. Virginia Tech on Oct. 2, Jamie Doak qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships with her personal-best 1-meter score of 269.25. Last spring, the junior from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, earned bronze on the 3-meter board while making her collegiate debut at the A-10 Championships.
GW has already made three new additions to its all-time swimming top 10 lists, as well. Matic's season-best time of :48.83 in the 100 fly ranks sixth in men's program history, while Osina now sits 10th in the 200 back (1:48.98). On the women's side, rookie Julia Knox ranks seventh in the 400 IM with her time of 4:28.72 at ODU.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS: The Pitt men's squad is receiving votes in the CSCAA national poll following a season in which it finished ninth at the ACC Championship and sent four swimmers and three divers to the NCAA meet.
The Panther women qualified a pair of divers for the 2021 NCAA Championship after placing 11th as a team at the ACC meet.
UP NEXT:Â GW will ramp up preparations for the quality meets on its schedule next month. The Buff and Blue are set to send representatives to the Toyota U.S. Open (Dec. 1-4) and Speedo Junior Nationals (Dec. 8-11) and also compete in the competitive Princeton Invitational from Dec. 3-5.
