Colonials and Terriers square off at 7 p.m.
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball opens up a home-heavy month of December with a Wednesday night date against Boston University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on NBC Sports Washington Plus and ESPN+.
FLASH SALE: After a relatively slow start to the campaign, junior James Bishop has found the scoring knack, averaging 18.2 ppg over his last five contests. Bishop is shooting 43.2% from the floor and 31.4% from beyond the arc over the last five games compared to 20.9% and 15.7%, respectively, in the season's first three games. Bishop enters Wednesday having taken the fifth-most shots in the country (117) and having played the eight-most minutes in the NCAA (289:47).
DELIVERING THE GOODS: Noel Brown posted 12 points on five made field goals last Wednesday vs. Missouri State, both career-high outputs. It marked the second double-digit effort of the season for Brown, who also scored 10 points at Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 16. A reserve his entire freshman season, Brown has made the jump this year to full-time starter, nearly doubling his minutes played from 9.2 to 16.8. He's also seen increases in points per game (1.7 to 4.6), rebounds per game (1.8 to 3.1) and field goal percentage (42.9 to 51.9).
BREAKING DOWN THE DEFENSE: GW's defense ranks ninth in the A-10 in points per game allowed, but a look under the hood shows the potential for improvement moving forward. Per KenPom, GW is currently fourth in the A-10 in effective field goal percentage defense (46.4%), which takes into account the extra value of a 3-pointer. The main factor is GW having the second-best 3-point defense in the conference, and 47th nationally, at 27.9%.
GW's adjusted defensive rating of allowing 101.6 points per 100 possessions is 6.2 points better than last year, and the best rating since the 2016 NIT Championship team (101.0). All three marks are the best in Coach's Christian's 10-year coaching career.
A LOOK AT THE TERRIERS: BU has won four of its last five games following a last-second, 61-60 victory over Merrimack on Sunday. The lone setback in that timeframe was an 81-80 overtime loss at Florida State. The Terriers defeated Northern Illinois (76-58) and Sam Houston State (72-59) to earn the Jax Bracket title at the Jacksonville Classic earlier this year.
The Terriers were projected as the top team in the Patriot League this year, led by Preseason Player of the Year Javante McCoy. The graduate student has lived up to the billing with 17.3 ppg and 3.0 apg thus far this year.
COVID PROTOCOLS AT SMITH CENTER: Masks are mandated indoors on GW's campus unless actively eating or drinking. Please note that the university has revised and updated its visitor policy, adding new requirements for our guests to campus. To attend our games,
Option 1: Present proof of full Covid-19 vaccination status (via displaying an actual vaccination card, a complete picture of the card, or an online digital vaccination record).
Option 2: Attest that you are vaccinated, or if unvaccinated, attest you have received a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of your visit to campus by registering here. Each individual needs to fill this out and show it at the event.
If those options are not possible, a rapid test at the lower gate #1 (NW Corner) is available.
