Clutch 3-pointer from Sheslanie Laureano puts GW over the top
NORFOLK, Va. - Sheslanie Laureano hit a corner 3-pointer with 6.4 seconds left and the Colonial defense stymied Old Dominion on their final possession to help lead GW women's basketball to a 47-45 road victory against the Monarchs on Thursday.
In a contest that had numerous twists and turns, GW took a 29-21 lead into halftime, and led by as many as 16 points. However, a series of clutch ODU shots in the fourth quarter helped the Monarchs close the gap. ODU eventually took the lead with two minutes left in the game, before Laureano's 3-pointer in the final ten seconds gave the Buff & Blue the win for good.
While Laureano's clutch 3-pointer helped settle Thursday's contest, it was GW's defense that continued to lead the way for the Buff & Blue. Coming into Thursday, ODU had averaged 68 points on the season, but the smothering GW defense held the Monarchs to just 45 points on 32 percent from the field, including a season-low 12 percent from downtown. It's the third time in four contests that GW has held its opponent to under 50 points.
Offensively, the Colonials were finally able to get their shots to fall from beyond the arc, shooting a season-high 25 percent from downtown. Individually, it was GW's guards who helped lead the attack at Chartway Arena, as Kyara Frames (11 points) and Aurea Gingras (11) combined to score 22 of GW's 47 points.
As has been the case this season, the GW bench continued to bludgeon teams, outscoring the Monarchs 27-8 Thursday night. The Colonial bench has now outscored its opponents 92 to 53 through its first four games.
The Colonials will be in action again on Monday, when they return to the Smith Center to take on Quinnipiac. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
