Colonials, Terps renew acquaintances for the first time since 2013
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball begins a three-game road swing with a short jaunt to College Park to take on #21 Maryland on Thursday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
20-20 VISION: Brendan Adams and Joe Bamisile both reached the 20-point threshold in their GW debuts on Tuesday. Combined, they were 14-of-27 (51.8%) from the field, 5-of-11 (45.5%) from deep and contributed 10 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals. It marked the first time that GW had a pair of 20-point scorers since Feb. 21, 2021 vs. Rhode Island (James Bishop and Jamison Battle).
Adams' 22 points in the season opener were the most scored by a Colonial in the lid-lifter since Tyler Cavanaugh had 24 against Maryland Eastern Shore in 2016.
IMMEDIATE IMPACT: Adams and Bamisile follow in the footsteps of their fellow major conference transfers in having first-game success with GW. All five reached double figures in their opening game with the Buff & Blue:
• Brendan Adams - 22 vs. Saint Francis (11/9/21)
• Joe Bamisile - 20 vs. Saint Francis (11/9/21)
• James Bishop - 20 vs. Navy (11/25/20)
• Ricky Lindo, Jr. - 13 vs. VCU (1/13/21)
• Amir Harris - 11 vs. Longwood (12/28/19)
BAM-BAM: After spending his first year at Virginia Tech, Joe Bamisile is one of five transfers entering the program this year. The former top-100 recruit nationally appeared in 13 games for the Hokies last season, averaging 3.5 ppg. Bamisile's 20 points were nearly half of his total output from a year ago, when he scored 45 points for VT. He also had more blocks (3), as many steals (2), and nearly as many assists (3) as he did his entire debut season.
A LOOK AT THE TERRAPINS: Maryland opened its season with an 83-69 victory over Quinnipiac on Tuesday behind five players in double figures. Georgetown transfer Qudus Wahab had 17 to lead the way for the Terps, who are coming off a visit to the NCAA Tournament Second Round last season.
UMD has qualified for six of the last seven NCAA Tournaments under head coach Mark Turgeon, who enters his 11th season in College Park. The Terps were projected to finish fifth in the Big Ten this season.
HISTORY VS. MARYLAND: GW and Maryland for the 69th time in program history on Thursday night, but for the first time on a campus since 1979, which also took place in College Park. GW is 8-16 all-time on the road in the series, last winning at UMD in 1977.
The last 10 meetings between the two programs were a part of the BB&T Classic event held at the Cap Centre in Landover, Md., and Capital One Arena in downtown D.C. GW has won three of the last four meetings with UMD, including a last-second victory in 2013 on a jumper by Maurice Creek. The Buff & Blue have beaten a ranked Maryland squad on five occassions, including the last two such instances in 2004 (#12 Maryland) and 2005 (#21).
