Bamisile scores 20 for the second straight game
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â GW men's basketball was within a possession of #21 Maryland with less than two minutes left, but a pair of missed shots and a dagger 3-pointer on the other end gave the host Terrapins a 71-64 victory on Thursday.
The Buff & Blue (1-1) faced their largest deficit of the day with 5:39 left trailing by 12, but showed composure in the face of adversity, calmly going on 11-1 run over the next three minutes to cut the Maryland lead to two.
A UMD free throw pushed the lead to three, and Brendan Adams had a straightaway potential game-tying 3 rattle out with just over a minute left. Former URI standout Fatts Russell then provided the aforementioned dagger via a stepback triple with 44 seconds left.
GW's defense kept the Colonials in the game and led the Buff & Blue to a one-point halftime edge, 30-29. Maryland failed to hit a 3-pointer in the opening half and shot just 38 percent from the floor for the game, the second straight opponent to shoot below 40%.
Joe Bamisile was the star of the first half, scoring 16 of his game-high 20 prior to halftime. Bamisile, who wore his trademark grin while playing to the hostile crowd throughout the 40 minutes, also provided the highlight of the night with a breakaway windmill dunk. He added eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals to complement his second straight 20-point effort.
The super soph was one of four Colonials in double figures, including James Bishop who scored 11 straight points in the second half to keep the comeback alive before finishing with 13 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Ricky Lindo Jr., in his return game to College Park, provided his typical steady showcase with 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, narrowly missing a double-double for the second straight contest. Adams chipped in 14 on 6-of-13 from the floor for his second straight double-digit output.
GW will now face a tough turnaround with a flight to the West Coast and a Saturday night date with UC San Diego, who knocked off Cal in their opener. Tip-off is set for 10 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+.
