Five reach double figures, Dean posts double-double
WASHINGTON - In the return of fans to GW basketball games at the Smith Center in downtown D.C., a trio of returnees for the men's basketball put on a show. Against Hood College in exhibition play, James Bishop, Hunter Dean and Amir Harris rendered the game all but over by halftime.
The preseason All-A-10 guard Bishop resumed his scoring proclivity from the jump, and netted 14 points on just eight shots in the opening 20 minutes. His six assists were also part of a Buff and Blue effort that had 14 helpers on 20 first-half field goals. The Baltimore product went on to finish with a game-high 22 points, including a 6-of-11 clinic from behind the arc.
Dean, for his part, needed little help inside against the smaller Blazers with a perfect 5-of-5 opening half en route to 10 points and six rebounds by halftime, before finishing with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double. Thirty of GW's 46 points in the first half came in the paint.
Perhaps most encouraging for the 2021-22 squad, was the return to action of Amir Harris. After sitting out all of last season due to injury, Harris flashed his length and disruptive abilities against opposing guards with three blocks and two early steals in his 14:12 of floor time in the first half. The do-it-all swingman was all over the court looking healthy and spry on a breakaway steal and slam to punctuate the business-like manner in which GW put away Hood early.
The exhibition also marked the GW debut for first-years Brayon Freeman and Daniel Nixon, as well as transfers Brendan Adams (UConn), Qwanzi Samuels (FGCU) and Bryan Knapp (Cornell); a trio that all returned to the DMV this off-season to bring veteran experience to the younger squad.
Returning sophomore Noel Brown put up 12 points on the night with a splendid 6-of-7 performance for the big man from Northern Virginia at the line. Adams joined Bishop, Dean, Freeman (12) and Brown in double figures with 12.
Walk-ons Miles Gally, Laziz Talipov, Tyler Warner and Theo Stamoulis cleaned up the rout by all registering four-plus minutes late.
Next time the ball goes up at Smith Center it will be for real when GW hosts Saint Francis next Tuesday night, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. following GW women's basketball's Opening Night game vs. American at 5:30.
