Colonials and Red Flash square off on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball opens up the 2021-22 season on Tuesday, hosting Saint Francis at the Smith Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. with live coverage on NBC Sports Washington+ and ESPN+.
TOP THREAT: James Bishop enters 2021-22 as the A-10's leading returning scorer after putting up 19.1 points per game in his debut season for the Buff & Blue. Bishop reached double figures in 15 of his 17 games last season with 11 20-point games, including a career-high 29 in the A-10 Tournament vs. George Mason. The Baltimore native scored 49 points total in his freshman season at LSU.
Bishop became the first Colonial to average at least 19 points per game in a season since all-time leading scorer Chris Monroe averaged 20.2 in 2002-03. He was also the first GW player since Monroe that year to finish in the top two in the A-10 in scoring.
DISHING IT OUT: Not only did he score, but Bishop registered over five assists per game, ranking fourth in the A-10 and 43rd nationally. The southpaw sensation posted multiple assists in every game, including a career-high nine on a pair of occasions.
DAILY DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Senior Ricky Lindo Jr. appeared in just seven games last season, but made it count by becoming the only player in the A-10 to average a double-double with 11.4 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Following his debut on January 13 vs. VCU, no player in the A-10 had more double-doubles than Lindo Jr.'s four.
The D.C. native peaked in the A-10 Tournament with a career-high 21 points vs. Fordham and consecutive 14-rebound games vs. the Rams and George Mason.
CHASING GREATNESS: Although Lindo didn't qualify for the league leaderboard by only playing in seven games, he set the tone for a breakout season in 2021-22. The last Colonial to average a double-double prior to Lindo was Yinka Dare in 1993-94 with 15.3 ppg and 10.4 rpg. Lindo is looking to become the first Colonial since Tyler Cavanaugh in 2016-17 to register at least five double-doubles in one year.
A LOOK AT THE RED FLASH: Saint Francis was projected to finish eighth in the preseason NEC poll despite returning its top six scorers and 15 of 16 players from last year's team. The Red Flash bring back four starters from 2020-21, including third team All-NEC performer Ramiir Dixon-Conover, who posted a team-high 15.5 ppg and 5.6 rpg.
The Red Flash were 6-16 (5-13 NEC) a year ago, a rare occurrence under head coach Rob Krimmel, who enters his 10th season in charge of his alma mater. In three of the last four seasons, Saint Francis has advanced to the NEC Championship and appeared in three postseason tournaments.
