Drelling breaks out with 17 kills, hits .480
DOVER, Del. - First-year Elizabeth Drelling put forth a phenomenal individual effort on Saturday afternoon, but a late rally from GW volleyball fell short in a four-set setback at Delaware State (23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 19-25).
Drelling hit a robust .480 in 25 attempts, notching a team-best 17 kills. Graduate student Ashley Waggle recorded double-digit kills for the second time in as many matches with 13 in 32 swings.
GW hit .230 with 53 kills, one more than their hosts, but DSU swung a more efficient .314 with 52 kills. The difference turned out to be the Hornets' 14 blocks to the Buff & Blue's six.
Delaware State opened up a two-set advantage and held a four-point advantage at 20-16 in the third. GW rallied to rattle off six straight points, highlighted by a pair of Drelling kills to take the lead, 22-20. Waggle finished the set off with a kill to keep GW alive.
The Hornets broke open a 9-9 tie in the fourth set with seven straight points and fended off GW the rest of the way to finish off the match.
The Buff & Blue now turn their attention to the A-10 opener, traveling to face George Mason on back-to-back days next weekend. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
