Colonials and Patriots square off twice this weekend
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball is set to begin Atlantic 10 play this weekend when it visits Revolutionary Rival George Mason for a pair of matches on Saturday and Sunday. Both matches are set for 1 p.m. first serves, and Sunday's match will be streamed on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT: The shorthanded Buff & Blue opened their season with a pair of setbacks at Morgan State (3-0) and Delaware State (3-1) last weekend. GW was without the services of returning middle blockers Addie Feek and Sarah Pintel as well as transfer setter Lauren LaBeck, all of whom were slated for large roles this season.
ONE-TWO PUNCH: First-year Elizabeth Drelling and graduate student Ashley Waggle carried the load for GW offensively last weekend and rank at the top of the A-10 leaderboard in both kills and points. Drelling's 4.17 kills per set have her atop the league, followed closely in second by Waggle at 3.86. The roles are reversed with Waggle topping the conference with 4.64 points per set, followed by Drelling in second at 4.58.
CONTINUING THE TREND: GW was a top-50 team in the country last year when it came to aces and finished second in the A-10 with 1.59 per set. The strong serving carried over to the first weekend this year as GW averaged 1.86 aces per set, good for second in the A-10, with Sydney Welch (0.57) and Paz Dozie-Nnamah (0.43) placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the individual rankings.
ACROSS THE NET: George Mason is 0-5 on the young year following a three-set loss at VCU on Monday. Peyton Emkhe is the team's top offensive threat with 2.50 kills per set, swinging .127 in 118 attempts. Setter Erin Derick is second in the A-10 with 8.72 assists per set.
The Buff & Blue are 43-10 all-time against the Patriots and won both matches a year ago; in five sets at the Smith Center and in straight sets in Fairfax.
