Newcomer Ashley Waggle paces squad with 14 kills
BALTIMORE - After 432 days away from competition, GW volleyball returned to the court on Friday night at Morgan State, starting off the delayed 2020-21 season. Despite a strong effort from newcomer Ashley Waggle, the Buff & Blue fell in straight sets (23-25, 22-25, 22-25).
Waggle, a graduate transfer from TCU, paced the Buff & Blue with 14 kills and a .333 attack percentage. Junior Paz Dozie-Nnamah posted double-digit kills for the first time in her career, posting a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Overall, GW posted more kills (40-36) and blocks (6-5), but fell victim to 12 service errors and four blocking errors. First-year Elizabeth Drelling hit .211 with eight kills in her first career match.
GW opened up an early five-point edge in the first stanza, 14-9, thanks to a kill from Drelling and three consecutive attack errors from the Bears. Morgan State responded with five straight points of their own to set the stage for a back and forth end to the set. MSU broke a 22-22 deadlock with back-to-back points to help put the set away.
The Buff & Blue burst out to a 7-1 lead in the second set as a Drelling kill forced a Morgan State timeout. The Bears worked their way back into the set, eventually evening things at 12. With the set squared at 17 following another Drelling kill, Morgan State used a 5-1 spurt to open up enough of an advantage to gain the 2-0 lead.
The Bears led for the entirety of the third set, but not without a last push from GW, who got back-to-back kills from Waggle and then a block from Waggle and senior Callie Fauntleroy to close within 24-22. Mykaela Ross ended the uncertainty though with a kill to give the hosts the victory.
GW is right back in action on Saturday, traveling to face Delaware State. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
