Softball standouts honored by CoSIDA
AUSTIN, Texas - Recent graduates Jessica Linquist and Jenna Cone of GW softball have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, the organization announced Thursday.
A catcher, Linquist was tabbed to the Academic All-America Second Team, while Cone was honored as an infielder on the Third Team. They join GW Athletic Hall of Famer Elana Meyers Taylor (2006, 2007) on the list of softball student-athletes to earn the national recognition that considers academic success and on-field accomplishments.
GW was one of just four programs nationally to land multiple selections, along with SEC clubs Alabama, South Carolina and Kentucky.
"Jenna and Jess have made such an impact on our program academically, athletically and in the community," GW head coach Shane Winkler said. "Their commitment both in the classroom and on the field is exactly what you want from a student-athlete. This is a proud moment for our program and GW as we look to develop some of the best and brightest in the entire country."
Over the past four years, Linquist and Cone have achieved in the classroom while pushing the Colonials to new heights on the field. Their production at the top of the batting order in 2019 helped the program secure a share of its first Atlantic 10 title and a postseason berth in the National Invitational Softball Championship.
Linquist was named GW's Outstanding Female Senior Scholar Athlete last month in recognition of her 3.88 cumulative GPA pursuing a Psychology degree. The West Deptford, N.J., native is a three-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete and a 2019 A-10 All-Academic pick.
Linquist's work behind the plate has been key to the Colonials' continued rise. In 2019, she was selected to the All-Conference Second Team and also earned All-Region honors after hitting .373 with 65 runs scored to tie the conference record. Her 28-game hitting streak that spring remains the longest in the nation since 2014.
Cone's all-around excellence was recognized with GW's Lynn George Outstanding Senior Female Student-Athlete Award. One of the nation's top sluggers, she also held a 3.33 cumulative GPA in earning her Communication degree and stayed active in the program's community service efforts with DC Keen, Race to Beat Cancer and more.
As a junior in 2019, Cone became the first Colonial to be named A-10 Player of the Year and earn All-America honors. The three-time All A-10 selection and NFCA All-Region honoree closed the shortened 2020 spring ranked in the top four nationally in both career home runs (56) and RBIs (203). She's also the program's all-time leader in extra-base hits (98), total bases (431), slugging percentage (.760) and on-base percentage (.484).
Both Linquist and Cone are set to continue their studies at GW. Linquist will work toward a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling through the Graduate School of Education and Human Development, while Cone is seeking a master's in Media & Strategic Communication through the School of Media & Public Affairs.
