Brigham, Gingras and Perea ride high into Foggy Bottom
WASHINGTON - Despite the disappointment of seeing their high school careers abruptly cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, GW women's basketball signees Ali Brigham, Aurea Gingras and Caranda Perea can still plan for a bright future as they set their sights on Foggy Bottom and their next adventure.
Head coach Jennifer Rizzotti remarked upon the trio's signing back in November that "we have three great human beings, excellent students and basketball players ready to join a program aspiring to be nationally recognized on a consistent basis."
Brigham completed her high school career by taking Franklin High to its first state title game in program history, earning the top ranking in the entire state of Massachusetts and being crowned co-champions. She also became the school's all-time leading scorer, boys or girls, with 1,692 points to go along with over 1,000 rebounds in her career.
The Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year nominee rounded out her postseason accolades by being named to the all-scholastic team by both the Boston Herald and Boston Globe.
"I'm super excited to come to GW because it's always been a dream to play Division I basketball," Brigham said. "I'm looking forward to the next chapter in my life to play for a great university and team like GW!"
Gingras also earned a state championship in her final season at Edison HIgh School in nearby Fairfax, Va. Serving as team captain, Gingras repeated as a first team all-conference performer and became a first-team all-region selection while also earning a spot on the league's all-defensive team.
Her state title was the third in four years of her high school career, joining a pair of championships won while attending Paul VI Catholic High School.
"I think the unfortunate end to this season is even more motivation to work hard as we get ready to go into GW," Gingras said. "As much as this one hurt, I am so excited and grateful to be able to keep playing basketball and to be playing at GW next season."
Perea similarly put up sterling numbers in her senior campaign for Altoona Area High School. She was destined to play in the 2020 Mirror Classic, an annual All-Star game highlighting the best players in Central Pennsylvania, prior to its cancellation.
She reached the 1,000-point threshold during her final campaign and ultimately earned all-district and all-region honors. On the defensive end, she led the Central Pennsylvania area with 62 blocks during the regular season.
"I am beyond excited to finally get to play for GW these next four years," Perea said. "I've been waiting since the end of 10th grade to start this part of my journey."
The trio joins graduate transfer Jasmine Whitney, who joins GW after three years at Pitt, as the four new members of the Colonials for the 2020-21 campaign.
