Colonials aim to win fifth straight against Rams in all-time series
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball faces a quick turnaround with a road trip to Richmond, Va., on Sunday to battle with VCU. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
RESERVE ENERGY: GW's bench has provided the majority of the team's production the last two games, combining for 51 of the team's 100 points. The Colonials had a season-high 28 points from its reserves on Sunday against Saint Louis and then added 23 on Thursday for the sixth performance of 20 or more points in nine league games. Redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta authored her fourth double-digit effort off the bench on Thursday, trailing only the five put up by sophomore Kayla Mokwuah.
GW owns a 51-1 edge in bench points over its last two games and is now +72 (177-105) in the category during league play (+8 per game), receiving an average of 19.7 per game.
SIMPLY SYD: Zambrotta led the team in scoring for the second straight contest on Thursday with 10 points. She's now reached double figures in three straight games and is averaging 12.3 ppg over the stretch, shooting 44.8% (13/29) from the floor after a four-game stretch in which she averaged 4.5 ppg and shot 10.7% (3/28).
The Louisville transfer is second on the team in scoring in both league games and overall in her first year in the Buff & Blue.
GET USED TO IT: First-year Faith Blethen has broken out of a recent shooting skid to hit five 3-pointers in the last three games, vaulting her back to seventh in the A-10 in 3-point shooting at 37.3%. She's directly behind redshirt freshman teammate Tori Hyduke, who is sixth at 38.1%.
Together, the two make up the best 1-2 deep ball tandem in the league and have hit 65 of GW's 111 made triples this year. GW is the only team to have a pair of players in the top seven of the league in 3-point accuracy.
HISTORY VS. VCU: GW has controlled the all-time series with VCU, winning 10 of the 11 matchups in program history, including four straight. The Colonials are 7-1 against the Rams as A-10 foes and have never lost at the Siegel Center, winning all five matchups in Virginia's capital city. Last season, GW handed the visitors their first conference loss, 57-48, behind 21 points from senior Mei-Lyn Bautista and 12 from then-first-year Maddie Loder.
A LOOK AT THE RAMS: VCU, fresh off an A-10 regular season co-championship last year, was the overwhelming favorite to win the league this season and has backed it up with an 8-1 mark through the first nine league games. The only blemish came last weekend at home in a loss to Duquesne. Tera Reed (14.9 ppg) and Danielle Hammond (11.3) provide the headlines for VCU as a pair of double-digit scorers with Taya Robinson serving as a strong third option with 9.7 ppg and 4.1 rpg. All three average at least 12.9 ppg in league play.
The Rams have found their footing against league foes, owning a +11.1 scoring margin and holding teams to just 53.1 ppg. Both rank second in the league behind first place Dayton.
