Potter finishes with 17 points and 12 assists in the loss
WASHINGTON — On a night with a little something for everyone, from artist Swae Lee in the building to a College Democrats vs. College Republicans halftime scrimmage, it figured from the outset that the actual basketball game would be an entertaining, final seconds finish. GW and Richmond didn't disappoint on Tuesday as the A-10 combatants and I-95 foes tangled in DC.
Despite falling behind by as many as 12 points near the midpoint of the second half, the Colonials never quit and stormed back to nearly stun the Spiders. The Buff and Blue found themselves down seven, 71-64, with :39 ticks left, until a Maceo Jack three-pointer -- one of the sharpshooter's four threes on the night -- found the bottom of the bucket with 22 seconds to play. After a pair of Richmond freebies, Jack then cut the lead back to three with :13 to play after buying all three free throws awarded after getting hit while taking a triple try. Two missed Richmond free throws later led to that man again, Jack, grabbing a rebound and giving the home club a chance for a tie on the game's final possession. After a timeout wasn't granted to GW, senior point man Armel Potter (17 points, game-high 12 assists), drove the lane but was fouled to put him at the line for two shots trailing by three. After missing the first one, an intentional miss on the second led to a scramble for the ball which Potter corralled. He darted out to the land of plenty and lofted a game-tying attempt in the waning seconds, but came up just short in the ultimate 73-70 defeat.
For a team that thrived on sterling free throw shooting earlier in the season, in this one the bounces didn't fall in. In the narrow loss by merely a field goal, unfortunately, the Colonials left 12 points at the line in an atypically off performance. GW was just a smidge behind its free throw shooting percentage (.500) with its field goal percentage (.490, 25-of-51) in a sign that when everything clicks for the Colonials -- with Jack and first-year Jamison Battle leading the conference in made three-pointers -- the team will be a dangerous opponent in next month's Atlantic 10 Championship in Brooklyn.
Jack finished with 17 points to tie Potter for team-high honors, with first-year Jameer Nelson Jr. (13 points, team-high eight rebounds) and Battle (10 points) giving GDUB four double-digit scorers. The contest featured 10 lead changes and four ties in a thriller that saw GW's three first-year starters (Battle, Nelson Jr. and Chase Paar) log more than half (104:20) of the team's 200 man/minutes of court time.
Blake Francis (19), Nick Sherod (15) and Grant Golden (12) were the Spiders' top scorers.
In the push for A-10 Championship seeding, the Colonials are on the road for two of the regular season's final three contests. Senior Night next Wednesday night vs. Fordham marks GW's final home contest of the season, sandwiched between games at VCU (Saturday at 4 p.m. on CBSSN) and league-leader and nationally Top 5 ranked Dayton in the regular season finale on March 7th.
