RICHMOND — The George Washington men's basketball team dropped its penultimate road game of the season to VCU, 75-51, on Saturday afternoon at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Junior Maceo Jack led the Colonials with 12 points and was one of three players in double figures. Senior Arnaldo Toro and first-year Jamison Battle each finished with 10 points apiece. GW scored 24 of its 51 points from the inside the paint with eight second chance conversions.
The game started in GW's favor as Jack knocked down his first of two 3-pointers off the initial sequence. The Colonials kept the score within a possession for the opening four minutes until VCU used a 10-0 run and led 16-5 with 13:58 left in the first.
Midway through the first half, VCU took a 20-10 advantage before the Colonials scored the next seven points and pushed the difference down to 20-17 at the 8:24 mark on a layup by first-year Jameer Nelson Jr., who scored all six of his points in the opening frame.
The Colonials battled the rest of the half and kept the score within single digits and had a chance to tie the game after Nah'Shon Hyland missed a layup with 5:25 left, but a GW turnover allowed VCU to regain its two-possession lead.
GW went into the break trailing 32-28 after redshirt senior Armel Potter scored with three seconds remaining on a layup.
The Rams started the second half on a 14-3 run and outscored GW 43-23 in the final 20 minutes.
VCU had four players in double figures, led by Mike'L Simms with 14 points on 4-of-5 from the outside. Hyland had 13 points and hit three triples for the Rams. The hosts connected at a .560 clip from the field, assisting on 17 of 28 field goals.
GW will play its final home game of the 2019-20 season at the Smith Center on Wednesday vs. Fordham (7 p.m., ESPN+, TuneIn app).
