Men's Basketball Loses to Fordham
3/4/2020 9:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON — The excitement of Senior Night celebrating GW men's basketball seniors Adam Mitola, Armel Potter, Luke Sasser, Arnaldo Toro and Justin Williams — who started the contest together for the first time ever -- gave way to a disappointing finish to a feisty and confident Fordham team that had already tasted victory against GW once this season.
In a 63-52 setback to the Rams, despite the pregame excitement, the Colonials couldn't knock down open looks and were outshot and outrebounded by their guests from New York. Fordham made the most of its trips to the free throw line, with a 15-of-17 (.882) performance at the stripe, and hit the glass for a +3 rebounding edge that wouldn't allow GW to cash in on its own misses.
In his final Smith Center game, Potter paced GW with 16 points and five assists but was the lone man in the Buff & Blue to connect on more than half of his shots (5-of-9). Minus Potter, the balance of GDUB suffered through a 13-of-41 shooting night (.317). First-year Jamison Battle and junior Maceo Jack registered 10 points apiece, but the conference's top two three-point marksmen were an atypical 4-of-16 combined from behind the arc.
Despite the off-shooting, GW did hold a 48-43 edge in the late stages of the contest, only to see the Rams finish on a 20-5 run. Fordham big man Joel Soriano dominated inside with 14 points and 15 rebounds, as the Rams got 34 of their 63 points in the paint. Josh Colon led all scorers in the contest with 17 points for the visitors, while Erten Gazi netted 12.
With one final regular season game before next week's A-10 Championship in Brooklyn, the Colonials will get a look at the top-seed heading into the tourney. Dayton will enter Saturday's clash in Ohio undefeated in conference play and ranked #3 in the nation. Tip-time from UD Arena is 7 p.m. on ESPN+. ESPN's college basketball preview show will also be shot from the Dayton campus Saturday at 11 a.m. on the main ESPN channel.
