Colonials to host American for home opener on Wednesday
DURHAM, N.C. – In its third straight contest on the road to open the 2020 season, the George Washington lacrosse team fell to Duke, 21-6, on Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blue Devils were the first to strike, with Abby Landry scoring from the free position just 20 seconds into the game. GW responded with back-to-back goals from senior co-captain Katie Quinn and junior Ioanna Mantzouratos, but Duke bounced back with four goals of their own to go up 5-2 with 20:54 to play. Catie Perkins was able to halt the Blue Devils offensive effort with a goal at the 15-minute mark, but Duke continued to press and scored seven straight to hold a 12-3 advantage. Kendall Lambert found the back of the net with one minute on the clock to bring the Colonials within eight at the break.
Duke continued to dominate the game's second half, scoring nine more goals while holding the Colonials to three to finish the day with the 21-6 victory.
NOTEWORTHY
• Mantzouratos paced the squad with two goals on the day, while Maddy O'Brien, Perkins, Lambert, and Quinn netted one apiece.
• Perkins nabbed three of GW's seven draw controls at Duke.
• Keeper Megan Patrick made 10 saves on the day while Alexa Solomon registered two.
