Colonials scored five goals in the final 1:30 of play
WASHINGTON – The George Washington lacrosse team opened its 2020 home slate at the GW Lacrosse Field at the Mount Vernon Campus on Wednesday afternoon, falling short to local rival American, 20-16, despite a late comeback attempt that saw the squad score five goals in the final 1:30 of play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles were first to find the back of the net, with Casey Harkins scoring from the free position. GW quickly evened the score one minute later with a tally from Kendall Lambert, but American bounced back with four consecutive goals to go up 5-1. Tori Hampton stopped the Eagles' surge with a goal at the 20:21 mark, but American continued to press and once again responded with another strike. The two squads continued to trade goals, but the Eagles pulled away with a pair of three-goal scoring streaks to lead 14-6 going into the break.
The Colonials opened the second half with a goal from Tori Hampton, before American fired back with a trio of their own to increase its lead to 17-7. With 16:29 on the clock, a goal from Maddy O'Brien sparked the Colonials' offense, with the Buff and Blue scoring nine of the game's 12 remaining goals. GW saw its biggest surge on attack in the final 1:30 of play, with tallies from Ioanna Mantzouratos, Maddy O'Brien, Catie Perkins, Christine Weber, and Tori Hampton. The late comeback surge, however, came up just short, as American finished the day with the 20-16 advantage.
NOTEWORTHY
• Mantzouratos and Hampton paced the squad with a trio of tallies, while Perkins, Kiernan, Lambert, and O'Brien scored two each. Quinn and Weber added to GW's offensive effort with one tally apiece.
