Colonials’ comeback falls short on Sunday
WASHINGTON – In its second of three straight games at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus, the George Washington lacrosse team suffered an 11-9 setback to Campbell on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GW was quick to get on the board, with Kendall Lambert opening the scoring by causing a turnover in the crease, picking up the ground ball and shooting the ball into the back of the net. The sophomore continued her momentum, scoring just one minute later to put the Colonials up, 2-0. The Camels responded with a tally off the free position, before Christine Weber took a pass from Lambert and scored with nine seconds left on the shot clock. Campbell responded with back-to-back goals to even the score at three, before getting a 4-3 edge at the 8:12 mark. The Camels continued their scoring streak to close the half with a 7-3 advantage.
Campbell continued its momentum to start the second half with a quick strike before senior co-captain Katie Quinn was able to snap GW's scoring drought with a breakaway goal. Fellow co-captain Caroline Kiernan brought the Buff and Blue within three with a tally at the 22:38 mark, but Campbell halted the Colonials' streak with a strike one minute later. GW continued to press on attack and scored three straight with goals from Lambert, Morgan McDonnell and Tori Hampton to put the squad within one, but Campbell added another with 10:34 on the clock. McDonnell scored from the free position to give GW its ninth goal of the day, but a Camel tally at the 4:43 mark proved to be the difference-maker as Campbell finished the day with the 11-9 win.
