Gymnastics to Host Sweet Meet on Podium on Sunday

Colonials to face NC State, NIU and Temple for first podium meet in program history
LEADING OFF: The George Washington gymnastics team makes its return home to the Charles E. Smith Center to host NC State, Northern Illinois and Temple for its Sweet Meet (Brownie & Girl Scout Day) on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. The meet will be contested on podium, an elevated competition floor as seen at the NCAA Gymnastics National Championship, for the first time in GW program history.
LAST TIME OUT: In its second and final trip out West this season, the George Washington gymnastics team posted a 194.900 to take second in dual meet action at the University of Denver. The host Pioneers, who currently rank fifth nationally, posted a season-high matching score of 197.425 to secure the victory. GW earned its 194.900 behind team scores of 48.625 on vault, 48.550 on bars, 48.925 on beam and 48.800 on floor.
ChamBLISS: Coming back from a season-ending Achilles injury in 2019, sophomore Deja Chambliss made her all-around debut at No. 5 Denver on Sunday, going four-for-four with her routines (no falls) to finish third on the podium with a 39.150, a mark that ranks first in EAGL. The Chesterfield, Va., native paced the team in three of four events. On vault, Chambliss led the squad, along with Cydney Crasa, with a score of 9.775. Chambliss has scored above a 9.725 on vault in all seven meets this season. The sophomore also topped the team on bars with a 9.750 before making her 2020 floor debut with a career-high 9.825. Chambliss finished her night on beam, posting a career-high 9.800.
FLOOR-ishing: With a trio of injuries in the Colonials' floor lineup, the squad rose to the challenge in Denver, finishing with a score of 48.800. Chambliss made her 2020 floor debut with a career-high 9.825, topping the team with Crasa. For Crasa, the 9.825 marked her fifth score above a 9.800 on floor this season. Warhol matched her career-high for the second straight meet with a 9.775, while first-year Hannah Munnelly posted a 9.700 in her first collegiate appearance on floor. Zona wrapped up the third rotation with a 9.675.
A LOOK AT THE LEAGUE: The Colonials currently sit in a three-way tie for third in EAGL with Pittsburgh and North Carolina with a 194.204 average. NC State tops the league with its 195.183 average, while UNH follows steadily behind with a 194.836. Towson rounds out the standings in sixth (193.508 avg.)
Individually, Chambliss ranks first in the all-around with her 39.150, while her 9.807 average on vault is good for fifth. Simone Banen also ranks fifth, but on uneven bars, with her 9.757 average and 9.875 high, while Hannah Cohen tops EAGL on beam (9.837 avg., 9.900 high). The junior has held onto the top spot on beam since returning to the lineup from injury on Jan. 31.
ROAD AHEAD: The Colonials will head back out on the road next week, traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a dual meet with UNC on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. The squad will get a taste of what it's like to compete in Carmichael Arena, the site of the 2020 EAGL Championship.
